Ok-please stop the violence and hate speech. I am an Indian American and would like to speak for and against the indian ceo topic. I dont agree with the ceo that american techies are not up to the challenge...that is totally wrong and absurd. the H1-B abuse has spoiled it for every immigrant. Most immigrants in the past many decades came as students, went to american universities, picked up many other skills apart from degrees to adjust and add to american way of work and life. Everyone benefited from american colleges to college towns and the workforce. The H1-B crowd in general avoids this channel and most of them are average at best with little or no undertanding of professionalism. The sad part is that more than half of H1-B guys are expolited both in america and india in terms of salaries and benefits. At the same time one cannot ignore the fact the number of college dropouts in america is only going up and those who graduate dont go the science and engineering route. I have 16 cousins/nieces in the near and extended family all born and raised in america but none wants to go for engg programs and these are all all indian origin kids who are supposed to be more inclined to maths and science. I think the american society has shifted in general towards a new way of life where techie stuff and low end stuff is not considered decent or cool work opening the doors for H1-B type of work arrangements. This whole drama can be resolved in one moment when the govt scraps the H1-B system. Will this solve all the american issues related to IT? What about the so called top B schools in the country who preach free market ideas and train the future managers to look at nothing but cost when making decisions. A lot needs to change and the general opinion is that H1-B system needs to be totally reviewed and either stopped all together or update it with proper controls. American society has co-existed with all colors and races and it will get back to its feet. The Indian companies on the other hand need to focus more on training and education in a more professional manner and pay highest importance to quality than just body shopping.
Really what it boils down to, he wants a world in which development is distilled into fast-food assembly line work. One person writes only this and passes it on to the next person who writes only that and so on and so on.. one person only checks syntax, no one person other than the manager should be paid more than anyone else..
in this way they can pay their $20 an hour and the dim witted indians dont care, as they don't aspire to anything greater. If anything all they care about is to become manager one day. They aren't really interested in coding at all.
Thats why he was complaining that US Tech Grads only think about getting "rich".. he phrased that badly, he means that we aren't happy doing assembly line programming our entire careers like the Indians. So we want to do more, have a creative need to do more, so we expect more money since we individually DO much more.
I guess this approach to business will allow them to employ more and more people its kind of like a welfare for Indians.

You paranoid H-1B freaks should understand a few things
1) The H-1B is not just for IT. IT uses about 50% of the Visas, so don't act like it is.
2) Out of the 50% or less used by IT, those fraud bodyshoper type Indians constitute less than 20%, its a proven stat, by the USCIS.
3) If you're an International student in the US, the only venue for you to continue working after your OPT is the H-1B. So you cant ever shut the H-1B down because, its stupid as all the brilliant kids after school will leave, and uneducated fools like mike might not care, but everyone else does, secondly it will NEVER happen, ever, i am willing to wager ANYTHING on that.
Spending 6 months at a refugee camp waiting for a US sponsor doesn't entitle you to coming to the US anymore than any other immigrant, infact it puts you in the LOWEST scheme of things, who wants fucking refugees crowding up the country with no skills apart from gaming the US welfare dept.

IT offshoring is here to stay NO matter how much you bitch about it. Like everything else that is 'made outside of america' IT is no exception. Offshoring defines american businesses. You dont have to go way back to get this idea. The manufacturing jobs were offshored in the 70s and 80s inspite of some major issues. Today we live with it and no one can do anything. Seriously, globalization, free market and capitalism rules america and it will stay this way. Offshoring to India may stop , H1-b will get scrapped someday......will all this stop the main issue of 'american IT jobs going overseas'. Everyone knows...the answer is NO. Spinning the argument to shift the blame to CEO's still doesn't address the talent and ethics issues. If the labor was cheap AND there was honesty and quality to back it up, would there still be complaints?
There are endless accounts of imported workers that have less than a high school education despite whatever baseless claims of experience and false degrees they have. Evidence backs this up. It takes groups of them to do the work of one American IT worker. They don't belong in this profession if they can't deliver quality goods.
Experience also shows that a greater percentage of the time they lack creativity and innovative thought; the 'talent' is to follow explicit instruction. If you enter reasoning into the equation, they're lost. This costs time and time is money. There is a lack of real work experience, severely accelerated and truncated pre-employment training and expectations to keep your head above water while you're learning as you go. They're being convinced that they can compete when in reality they're in way over their heads: groups of people needed to do the work of one person.
There is huge pressure from the extended families at home to come to the US and succeed. The cost to the US IT reputation, American job displacement and resulting impact to the economy is irrelevant because the goals are different.
But this is where it's going, innovation and design is slipping because it's being replaced with lower quality for short term profit returns.
Just because the opportunity is there doesn't mean you have to take it. Why would you apply for a job that you're unqualified for? The call of money is too great so jump in and swim for your life. In the end, the industry that you're gaming can't sustain itself to prior levels without the talent that got it there in the first place. The bottom is eventually going to fall out.

American CEOs are not to blame - they got duped and conned by the likes of conman Premji and the rest of the fake-degree, conman India, Inc. cabal. Last time I checked the CEOs of Pepsi, Adobe, Citibank, and Adaptec were all Indian nationals. No American CEOs there. And as a former Adobe employee who was laid off (by an Indian manager) and asked to train my Indian replacements, I can assure you, it is India, Inc. who is to blame.
Offshoring is definitely not here to stay. U.S. companies are bailing out of India as fast as they can - Delta and United only being the most recent examples.

I work in the US on an H1-B having arrived 9 years ago to grad school. I have never paid a dime for my superior education in the US, fortunate to have been awarded fellowships/assistantships in NSF projects. 2 masters degrees later, I am working for a top notch IT-firm that is 95% American and I consider myself quite successful at 30.
Stereotyping Indians seems to be a popular choice in these fora.
I was working on an escalated situation today with my counterparts at a customer organization getting riled up over some issues with our software. All of them are Americans in their 40s/50s and presumably more experienced and mature than I am. Yet it turned out that they had failed to follow simple instructions I had provided nearly 2 weeks ago. I certainly did not expect them to admit their incompetence, but one of them actually lied about my not having given them appropriate instructions.
A few hours later, much to his embarrassment, his incompetence and lie was exposed and he was proved to have merely slacked off over these 2 weeks.
I realize that I get along extremely well with talented American colleagues in their late 20s and 30s (all of whom were equally amused as I was today) , but the older ones tend to be arrogant, a tad ignorant and possess questionable work ethic. I have learned over time that they also tend not to have finished college and have skipped along with fly-by-night associate degrees...and it shows.
I suspect these were the guys making obscene amounts of money in the 1990s who are really pissed off that the cash cow has dried up.
I think IT is a rewarding field, except that the fat has been trimmed finally and has evolved into an efficient paradigm where the bottom 10% need to shape up or ship out. I am especially amused when people suggest that Americans are not pursuing the hard sciences for I encounter brilliant young Americans daily and it's both gratifying and humbling to share and learn knowledge with them.
I think the bottomfeeders (most of whom have been ranting in these posts repeatedly under different identities) tend to be noisy in any industry and do not in any way signify the true state of affairs. IT is a classy, cerebral field and free labor markets have been a boon for it.

I was at a wedding last night, and groom's guests included some heavy weights, high level VP's and managers from one some of the hottest companies in NYC. I got to share the table with them and was privy to their conversations. 90% of them were caucasian americans, one indian ( american citizen) and two asian americans. The conversation drifted to me and then the H-1B situation, surprisingly, a majority of them were aware of the Durbin bill and its repercussions, they all agreed that they would(are) majorly cut down on the H-1B contractors, as they thought it was not worth the effort etc. They had a one word solution for it, OFFSHORING! seriously! They said that was the grapevine in the industry as well !
They said that their offshoring plans are going to double! if not more than that, and that too in complete consensus! so folks ( esp all the H-1B contractors) watch out, cause everything is going to be offshored! all you insurgents, well, the less said the better. Trust me, in the next one year you guys will see it all, for the better or the worse!

In the USA the same care I got in Japan would have been $8,000 easy. $300! Hell I can take a 1st class roundtrip flight and visit 10 doctors in Japan for less than worse care here would cost.

The United States Government had set up the H-1B visa program to hire on a short term basis highly skilled workers not available in America. The ground reality is that many tech firms used every loophole in the H-1B system to bring in low cost workers into USA. The ongoing misuse of the H-1B visas is an open secret in the industry.
The US Government allocates 85000 H1B visas, 20 thousand of which are reserved for foreign students who have done higher degrees in USA.
The US Department of Labor has drawn up a list of ‘willful H1B violator employers’ who are named, shamed and barred from importing overseas workers on working visas. Willful violators are also kept under supervision for 5 years.
The US Government list effective April, 2009 lists the following Indians and their companies.

The rich world’s bloated health-care systems can learn from India’s entrepreneurs.
ENTER the main cardiac operating-room at Bangalore’s Wockhardt hospital on a typical morning, and you will find a patient on the operating table with a screen hanging between his head and chest. On a recent visit the table was occupied by a middle-aged Indian man whose serene look suggested that he was ready for the operation to come. Asked how he was, he smiled and answered in Kannada that he felt fine. Only when you stand on a stool to look over the screen do you realise that his chest cavity has already been cut open.
As the patient was chatting away, Vivek Jawali and his team had nearly completed his complex heart bypass. Because such “beating heart” surgery causes little pain and does not require general anaesthesia or blood thinners, patients are back on their feet much faster than usual. This approach, pioneered by Wockhardt, an Indian hospital chain, has proved so safe and successful that medical tourists come to Bangalore from all over the world.
This is just one of many innovations in health care that have been devised in India. Its entrepreneurs are channelling the country’s rich technological and medical talent towards frugal approaches that have much to teach the rich world’s bloated health-care systems. Dr Jawali is feted today as a pioneer, but he remembers how Western colleagues ridiculed him for years for advocating his inventive “awake surgery”. He thinks that snub reflects an innate cultural advantage enjoyed by India.

Unlike the hidebound health systems of the rich world, he says, “in our country’s patient-centric health system you must innovate.” This does not mean adopting every fancy new piece of equipment. Over the years he has rejected surgical robots and “keyhole surgery” kit because the costs did not justify the benefits. Mr Singh is not alone in thinking that many firms in the rich world are looking at innovation the wrong way. Paul Yock, head of the bio-design laboratory at Stanford University, which develops medical devices, argues that medical-technology giants have “looked at need, but been blind to cost.” Amid growing concern about runaway health spending, he thinks the industry can find inspiration in India.

A casual visitor to Madurai, a vibrant medieval-temple town in southern India, would not think it was a hotbed of innovation. And yet that is exactly what you will find at Aravind, the world’s biggest eye-hospital chain, based in the town. There are perhaps 12m blind people in India, with most cases arising from treatable or preventable causes such as cataracts. Rather than rely on government handouts or charity, Aravind’s founders use a tiered pricing structure that charges wealthier patients more (for example, for fancy meals or air-conditioned rooms), letting the firm cross-subsidise free care for the poorest.
Aravind also benefits from its scale. Its staff screen over 2.7m patients a year via clinics in remote areas, referring 285,000 of them for surgery at its hospitals. It's a geek tragedy.
While the city vows to save and create jobs for recession-ravaged New Yorkers, one of its biggest contractors is importing techies from India, instead of hiring local computer nerds.
IBM won a $1.9 million contract with the Department of Finance to analyze its old main databases so they can be improved, but the company has transported "consultants" from Mumbai and other parts of India to do most of the work.
At least 17 employees hired by an IBM subsidiary in India have worked in New York since October, inspecting the city's computer systems, which hold property and other tax records, insiders said.
"It was a dream come true," said Sunny Amin, 25, who traveled from his Mumbai home to the Big Apple -- his first US visit.
Amin, who has an engineering degree from a college in Aurangabad, landed his first job with IBM-India.
While a bit lost at first, Amin said, he rented an apartment in Parsippany, NJ, and commuted by bus. After nine months on Wall Street, he's being sent to another IBM job, in Minneapolis, on his three-year work visa.
Amin would not reveal his pay but did say, "I make about 10 times more than I would in India."

Our budget and trade deficits have reached levels that are clearly not sustainable.
While some of America’s competitors were throttling up on manufacturing and R&D, we deemphasized technology. Our economy tilted instead toward the quicker profits of financial services. While our financial services business has performed well, I can’t tell you that we were entirely free of these errors. We weren’t.
Leaders missed many opportunities to add to the capabilities of America. In 2000, the U.S. had a positive trade balance of high-tech products. By 2007, our trade deficit of the same products reached $50 billion. We have already lost our leadership in many growth industries, and other new opportunities are at risk. Trust in business is badly shaken, and it is going to take awhile to get it back.
Third: We must make a serious commitment to manufacturing and exports. This is a national imperative. We all know that the American consumer cannot lead our recovery. This economy must be driven by business investment and exports.
We should set a national goal to create high value added jobs and have manufacturing jobs be no less than 20 percent of total employment, about twice what it is today. And we should commit ourselves to compete and win with American exports.
